Early Member Records SLFHL (1993) gives baptism date as 16 Aug 1840. Rebaptised Jun 1841 (he indicated this on his endowment record.) TIB card for marriage date to Elizabeth Sarah Jenkins. Heard President Woodruff preach the first sermon preached in Herefordshire - he was one of the United Brothers. Baptized by Elder John Cheese in 1840. Immigrated April 6, 1841, crossed in the ship "Caroline", reached Nauvoo (by way of Quebec), July 4. Lived in Nauvoo until the spring of 1846 then crossed the Mississippi river and camped by a slew for twelve weeks. All of the company had chills and fever.Mother and family had gone twenty miles West. She returned and got him and took him to Winter Quarters - he had chills every other day all the way there. In the Spring William had Black Scurvy. They dug artichokes, onions, and horse radish. William went to Missouri for provisions and started back. He met his mother's team and sent her driver on to Winter Quarters with his load and went back for provisions for starting West. Traveled in Bishop Hunter's hundred, Joseph Horn's fifty, and William Taylor's ten. Arrived in Salt Lake City October of 1847. He went to California in the Fall of 1849 and returned in the Spring of 1852. He moved to Nephi in the Fall of 1852. He reached Nephi November 18, 1852. He was married to Emma Jenkins by Bishop Jacob G. Bigler in Nephi. They were sealed in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. William was ordained a High Priest by William Paxman September3, 1892. He received his second washing in the Manti Temple.

After the death of his first wife he "lost interest in life; the relatives took the children and when Ruby was 5 he drifted out of their lives." He was herding sheep around Declo Idaho when Charles Smith Ingram who had known him in Nephi, Utah heard of him and sought him out.

Shorty's wife June said "She was very dear to me. I had a one-in-a-million for a mother-in-law. She was a joy to have around. I never heard her say one bad thing about anyone. She was a very dear, sweet person. She was a very hard working person and, because she was the mother of eleven children, I thought I'd never ask her to baby-sit my children, but she wanted to, so we called her to come sometimes when we wanted to go out. She was a real fine person."
